XCOMUFO.com's bug FAQ (technical bugs) X-COM 1

X-COM 1, X-COM UFO Defense, UFO: Enemy unknown, X-COM: Terran Defense Force... this game is known under all sorts of names, depending if you knew the game on disks, on cd or depending on your country. But the important thing is that the game never changed... even today. Thousand of fans (if not millions) will say that the first game was the best. There was even several projects to "remake" the game, and some fans are still working at it (Project Xenocide and UFO Alien Invasion). One truly awaited project that didn't make it unfortunately was X-COM Genesis, from the X-COM team of Microprose. This project was special because the game makers went to forums and said: "tell us what you want, and we'll make it". From what I was able to understand, and through some screenshots, the game would have been a best seller. Read more about X-COM Genesis and the X-COM Chronology.

Do you believe in UFOs? People abducted by aliens? Well if you don't, you will probably change your mind after you play X-COM: UFO Defense. If you have already played, then you know that it is not a good idea to stroll in open areas in the middle of the night. You never know when a hot plasma beam can cross your face, or even worse... you could make contact with a Chrysalid...

For decades, mankind has been wondering if he was alone in the universe. In the past years, isolated cases of appearing UFOs and people seeing unidentified flying objects concerned Earth's scientists. In 1998, UFOs began to land openly in rural areas; the aim of these early missions was of abductions of inhabitants and animals. The first military contact with the aliens led to the massacre of an entire squad. In November of that year, an emergency meeting was convened at the United Nations. As a result of that year, X-COM (eXtra - terrestrial COMbat unit) was established. Secret bases are established and the latest technology is made available. The best scientists and engineers were hired and began working on a new technology that would give our race a chance to eliminate this new threat. Intensive training was provided to the best soldiers and marines around the globe. Governments started giving funds in order to keep the new organization alive.

In 1999, the answer was clear. We were going to war with aliens in order to survive. The aliens, having the element of surprise and far more advanced technology, should not have any problems annihilating Earth. But they underestimated only one thing: that humans adapt quickly in order to stay alive.

Now, with you at the controls, Earth begins a new chapter with hope. In order to keep the faith, you can download the demo of X-COM: UFO Defense and see if you would make a good commanding officer, or just a loyal soldier. But for whatever personal reasons you do it, do it for the future of mankind.
