Mythos, Virgin and Bethesda announced in 2000 a new title: The Dreamland Chronicles: Freedom Ridge. It didn't bear the name X-COM but it was a strategy-based RPG that promised to play like X-COM. The story was very similar to a possible sequel to X-COM: not only have we lost Earth to the aliens, who have completely taken over the planet, but also there is only about 20 people left in our squad. The goal of the game is that we must re-capture Earth using stealthy, strategic measures, completely undetected. Several steps must be made to regroup: we need to gather more ammo, more ships, and more people, and everything and everybody are all hidden in little pockets all across Earth, waiting for us to rescue them.
The game takes place in the third-and first-person perspectives, and promised to be a huge, complex strategy. However, the bad curse of the X-COM Saga seemed to continue; the project ran out of cash. In 2001, everything was brought down, and Mythos closed down shortly after this huge disappointment, and returned to their original hit, Laser squad.
