At last! after so much time, efforts, money, hell everything, somebody got the guts to make another X-COM game! Officially, it's not an X-COM game, however, anybody that played it knows that it is. Somewhat simplified in a lot of ways, UFO: Aftermath let you concentrate on more important details like soldier levels, and choice of weapons instead of money and base maintenance costs. There is a lot of research involved, and that is a strong aspect of the game.
Here in this page, you can find official documents related to UFO: Aftermath, as well as my own personal thoughts of the game in general.
Personally, I think that the game is a huge success. First, let's start with the beginning. UFO: Aftermath rose up from the ashes of The Dreamland Chronicles: Freedom Ridge. Although Altar Interactive states that they started from scratch with this game, a lot was kept from the previous project. All the important aspects of an X-COM game are present. The team was able to perform a "facelift" to the way X-COM was played by eliminating the funds management (money), adding new mission types, a deep storyline, lots of weapons (with armor - specific collapsible guns) and many more features.
One feature that stands out for itself is the CoE (Counsel of Earth). Basically, if you neglect to do a mission, of if you wish to delegate it, the CoE will back you up and do it for you. Sometimes it does not change much, but who wouldn't be happy when you expand your territory and the CoE succeeded in acquiring two more bases?
A special note to Altar's team: As I said before, a lot was expected from Mythos Games with The Dreamland Chronicles: Freedom Ridge. As I played the game, the only thing that was coming up on my mind was that this game really brings up the X-COM feeling, just like in the good old days. This kind of attention deserves to be pointed out, and shows that you have much respect in what you do, and in return we give you all many thanks from all the X-COM fans out there. - Arky
